Mark, I saw the xp11/fsx comparisons in scenery video. My questions are more on how did you simpit work with xp11 or have you taken the time to configure it yet. I've switched to a Mac Pro after my pc tower died. So I'm looking in to xp11 since it runs on pc, OS X, and Linux. I have the main setup on my Mac Pro and it seems to be running great, I'll put xp11 on my laptop pc soon for when I travel. Right now I'm using my saitek x-56 Hoyas now I need to repair my Pro stand with all my saitek panels on it and setup TrackIR on the Mac. I have one for both systems.
i plan on making generic panel with the 100 plus controls on it I've already bought the switches, encoders, boards and wire I just need to figure out how I'm going to lay them out. I think I'm going to have to use a consol type control setup since it needs to be mobile since I live in a rv. That's the reason for the pro stand. If not I think I would have a more permanent setup.
I. Also hoping that aerosoft will do a twin otter for xp11 like the fsx one same with mega scenery I want them to do their payware scenery for xp11 since between orbx and them they have the better packages I like their idea of doing intense state level packages.
i tried my home town in xp11 and it's boring more so than the real stuff.let me know how well your setup works with xp11. Maybe we can get enough simmers requesting xp ports of the current top stuff that we might get it. I think fsx will be at its end of cycle within the next couple of releases of windows.
For something good on the core is i read that lockhead Martin has be working on p3d so that it's actually going to survive longer and the post 09 computers are able to use the multi core threading plus using the gpu more taking some of the load from the CPU. I read that LR with be staying in the market that was one of the reasons for xp11 whereas fsx is about all it's going to be except for third party patches .
If it wasn't xp11 And if p3d would run on OS X I might go with it since I've got hundreds of dollars worth of addons for fsx.

I am using SPAD.neXt to program everything in the cockpit. It works great as far as I can tell.

Mark, if your interested in a vrinsight pro pit let me know. I checked with them and they say it will not work with x plane. I wish I could find some more published info on X-Plane. I really thing it will be the sim of the future if p3d don't change their licensing fo allow for hobbies . Fsx will last until the hardware or os kills it because of the third party but it is almost a decade old give a couple years. Steam goes improve the basic sim they are concerned with the licensing of it. D.C.'S is about simulation of flight but simulation of war. I think because of my system needing to be mobile I'll do a pedasol with my switches and encoders in it that will ride beside me. I when thru you inside and out book and drew up a diagram that should cover all of the panels you discussed the I didn't see a 179 different controls i.e. Encoder or switch or button but I didn't count the individual actions like most toggle have off and on so that's two some are center off so those have three I'm thinking that's what you were referring to. If they are more needed please let me know so I can add them to my drawing. I'm stuck with X-Plane since it the only big name sim that runs on OS X.i want every setup so I can do like you start up the machine(s) start X-Plane and put the keyboard and mouse out of the way. I think I'll try a document what I do so as to help others once I get started. I ve already bought the encoders, switches and buttons a year or so ago might got the wire also but I'm not sure since it was a wile ago. I still need canon plugs if it's not a self contained system which I'm hoping it will be. One wire from it to the bcomputer and one power wire to the mains. If I can lay it out on a large sheet cake pan with a cover I will. Use the bottom of the pan for mounting the switches mount the boards to the lid and that way everything is neatly contained even a USB hub for all the USB cables coming from the boards. I haven decided how man love Bodensee boards I'll need yet since I'm not sure of the hombre of actions yet verses the number of inputs a board will take. I'll lay everything out before hand in aprogram that will allow me to optimize my use of the boards using every in put possible. I will need to order some common terminal strips for the multiple grounds because if I'm correct in my remembering the board on has on common ground input. I'm don't remember how many inputs the encoder uses.
If you know of any books from third party on X-Plane that will help in the understanding to get the most out of xp please let me know.

Not sure if I got all that, but I will add a few comments. The 179 switches didn't include the OFF actions. Many switches are three-way switches - e.g. ON-OFF-ON or ON-ON-ON. Most of the rotary encoders are three separate switches and the dual concentric encoders are five (inner left/right, outer left/right, push). That said, I would not implement all the switches I have if I was doing it again, as many are useless (windscreen wipers, for example).
If you are running X-Plane you will not in any case be able to create the same Twin Otter cockpit as I have, since you will be stuck with the RW Designs Twin Otter. This omits many of the systems. On th eothe rhand you will probably get it to more or less work much easier because of this. It largely seems to respond to standard X-Plane controls or datarefs. (Controls are the equivalent if FSX events, datarefs are the equivalent of FSX variables. Custom datarefs are the equivalent of FSX Lvars.) I don't know of any sources for X-Plane info, I'm still figuring it out myself. I would recommend SPAD.neXt but I am not sure of all its features yet. What it lacks is a manual so you have to ask questions in the forum to discover whole new areas of functionality you might not realise existed.
As for the future of the sims, I do wonder if LM will have to close the 'academic' licence loophole at some point if Dovetail's FSW takes off.

Mark which spacing did you use for the switches and encoders on your panels how did you figure it out? I don't remember the spacing but all the exact dimensions of the GPS and Autopilot panels are listed in the back of the AA book. You can also load up the graphic templates available in this forum and measure them.

Mark have you tried air manager from sim innovations? It's better than most guage relocation apps I've found even able to do Garmon 530 gps with work around for touch screen buttons. Check out Russ Barlow' you tube videos on air manager and the 530. He's doing everything with touch screen monitors and iPads. I'm thinking of combining things from you and him in my setup. Biggest problem is room for what I'm wanting to do.
