Hey... you started using Pilot Edge! Is that a one time thing for this review or did you commit to a plan? Great video, very informative. Radios/transponder must work properly for sure, I can make ATC mistakes with perfectly functioning equipment! So do you think the few issues were mostly interface/software then? I couldn't tell, but what did the virtual aircraft radio indicate when the transponder randomly squawked VFR?

I am pretty convinced that the issues I saw with the transponder are a Saitek driver bug. All that was happening was the Saitek panel display reverted to showing 1200 when I switched the other selector knob. The actual squawk code in the VC (and on my Elite transponder panel) remained the correct one. As soon as I moved one of the tuning knobs the Saitek panel then updated to show the correct squawk code again. It is hard to imagine how this could be related to the hardware mod, although I can't be sure. I am sold on this modification and I have now actually bought the panel in the video (actually, I paid for the kit and sent my unmodified panel back). I will use it for COM2 and NAV2 generally, and probably for ADF if I ever get serious about my radios.
As for PilotEdge, that video was an excuse to try it out and I signed up for the demo. Having done so I will probably sign up for real soon. It is impossible to over-state how PilotEdge immediately transforms FSX from an idle 'playing about' kind of experience into something like the real thing. You find yourself studying the airspace, planning ahead and rehearsing your flights - either in your head on in actuality offline - just like in real life. And you absolutely have to know the airspace and do things by the book or you get pulled up for it! And you're right, even when the equipment is working properly it's tough to get everything right. Main criticism of PilotEdge at the moment (apart from some clunkiness in the software) is that it doesn't have weather, although I guess they work to actual surface winds at the airports.
So look out for more PE in my videos. In fact the next video will be sort of connected to PE, in a roundabout way...

In fact the next video will be sort of connected to PE, in a roundabout way... Yeah, the reason I built a radio panel was to practice ATC communications. Mine works great but it really needs the LED numeric display. FSX ATC interface is just too clunky but, I'm still using it for now. My PE demo has long expired but when I used it, I became nervous like the real thing, and screwed up several times. I'm so out of practice. PE really transforms the sim as much as just about anything in my opinion, and your right, it's impossible to over-state this. Other ATC software doesn't compare. You did well, but I expected you would. Curious, did ATC have you verbalize your entire N-number each transmission?
I look forward to watching your videos using PE. Next, you need to broadcast live on Twitch TV. :-)

did ATC have you verbalize your entire N-number each transmission? No, it was just on first contact with each controller. I did edit a few bits out to make me look better That flight is familiar to me in real life as the first leg of my qualifying x/c, back in 1993, but almost 23 years is a long time to forget everything! I will do more PE vids sooner or later but I can't imagine a use for live broadcasting.

I can't imagine a use for live broadcasting. Haha... good point.

I can't stand the stock Saitek rotary encoders. Obviously, I am not alone! Along with their poor functionality, their bulky look adds even more to the already toylike aesthetics of the Saitek panels. I've ordered a set for each of my three radio panels and one for my multi panel. I'm looking forward to receiving them. Thanks, Mark for the introduction and review.
