Keith from Pilot Edge posted THIS VIDEO for his Real World VFR workshop. Nice setup. The cockpit without a virtual aircraft was particularly interesting to me. It didn't look bad at all. I think it may be X-plane.

Wow, those guys are serious. Not sure what I think about the cockpit - I think if I were flying seriously like they are then it makes sense to have the full panel independent of the view. I was looking something up in my instrument flying book just today and it made me realise how I'm just basically playing around in my 'simulator'!

P.S. That's a very interesting site! More ways to spend money. And they're having a sale...

Yeah, I think they've really got something with the ATC stuff, a true learning environment for sure. A year or so ago on a whim, I flew a Cessna Skycatcher with intentions of regaining currency. It had an MFD that was confusing to me since I've never piloted using one. Obviously, sims are great for becoming familiar with that kind of stuff. I think I mostly enjoy the sensations and visuals of flight and use the simulator to try and mimic that, which is why software like FTX is especially appealing to me (also having a sale, btw). But I think that will only get you so far in a sim and the learning environment eventually wins you over.
Just curious, would you feel comfortable piloting a real Twin Otter if you were thrust into that situation? :-)

Just curious, would you feel comfortable piloting a real Twin Otter if you were thrust into that situation? :-) Not really, no. Honestly, I know very little of the detail about the Twin Otter except in bits and pieces that I've made videos about. Nothing about the big picture and certainly not if anything went wrong. I think I'd have a sporting chance of getting one down in calm conditions, but that's it! Maybe I could drive it on autopilot if it had the same equipment as the Aerosoft one. Re. the FTX sale: predictable - I bought Scotland and an airport a couple of weeks before it started

a true learning environment for sure I am convinced that pursuing FSX (or P3D or whatever) to the level of realism you see in this video is where the real satisfaction is. No amount of Orbx airports can make barging the Extra around as interesting as learning to fly an NDB approach realistically, even into a default airport. I re-discover this kind of satisfaction from time to time and it goes all the way back to FSII on the Atari ST. I remember learning Charles Gulick's system for flying precisely from his (imaginatively-titled) book 'Flying Flight Simulator', and it was gripping even with the barely-recognisable graphics of the time. Of course doing it in Orbx-land with real weather these days is closer to the real thing but I think the satisfaction is actually nothing to do with aviation. I think it's more about fully immersing yourself in a complex system and achieving some level of mastery over it.

Re. the FTX sale: predictable - I bought Scotland and an airport a couple of weeks before it started I'm pretty sure I saw on their forum that they wait until you buy something before initiating a sale!

Gotta hand it to Orbx though, their software single-handedly got me back into simming. Then came the triple-monitor stuff, other great add-on software like A2A/FSUIPC/ASN, etc., and then some crazy dude taught me how to make a nice looking switch panel!
